Getting started with a growth mindset

Explore what a growth mindset means and how to approach learning and setbacks with more curiosity.

What is a growth mindset?

A growth mindset is the view that abilities can develop through suitable learning, practice and support. It is a way to approach a task, not a label that makes one person better than another.

Effort alone is not always enough. Strategies, opportunities, health and resources also matter. A useful question is what could help you learn the next part of a skill.

First: notice your current response

01

Think about how you respond to a difficult task. Do you describe the difficulty as permanent, or can you identify something specific to learn? Notice the pattern without blaming yourself.

Write down a few areas you would like to understand better and the words you use about them. Keep the exercise descriptive rather than judgemental.

Second: choose a manageable challenge

Select a small task that offers a realistic chance to learn. It should fit your circumstances rather than overwhelm you or prove your worth.

You might share an idea in a small meeting or try a beginner activity. Choose the scale and support that make the experiment appropriate for you.

Important note

This guide is educational. Seek qualified support for significant mental health or emotional concerns, and adapt these activities to your circumstances.

03

Third: look for useful feedback

An unsuccessful attempt can provide information about a strategy or skill. It does not establish a general truth about your ability or value.

Ask for specific, constructive feedback where it is safe and useful. Consider what to practise, what to change and what support you need before trying again.

Fourth: recognise the process

Notice preparation, useful strategies and appropriate help-seeking as well as the final result. Resting or changing an unrealistic goal can also be a sensible decision.

You cannot control every outcome or always choose how much energy you have. Focus on manageable actions without expecting results on a fixed timetable.

Choose one next step

A growth mindset develops through experience, not a single decision. Start with noticing a response, choosing a manageable task, seeking feedback or reflecting on the process.

Pick one idea that fits your current situation and see what you learn from trying it. You can revise the approach as you go.
